People First, Disabilities Second is a five year comprehensive program starting in kindergarten and ending in fourth grade. With district wide participation, the disability awareness program will educate local elementary school classes on a variety of disabilities including: physical disabilities, blindness, deafness, mental disabilities and learning disabilities. There will be a focus on what all people have in common regardless of their disability. Through formal and age appropriate teaching, hands on activities, guest speakers and open discussion, much of the mystery and stereotypes of disabilities can be eliminated. This classroom-based disability awareness program will foster more understanding, acceptance, respect and support from the peers of children who have disabilities
